What do thermal magnetic switches provide?

Electrical safety is essential in any type of installation (industry, commercial, residential, etc.). Therefore, it is necessary to ensure circuit protection using the best devices on the market, such as thermal magnetic switches. Due to their enormous importance, this article analyzes what they are and their main functions.

Understanding Thermal Magnetic Switches

These types of switches perform an essential function in protecting electrical circuits. The fundamental reason is that they have the ability to interrupt the current, specifically when abnormal situations are detected, such as common overloads or short circuits.

The design combines two protection mechanisms that are worth highlighting:

  • Thermal mechanism. It operates through a plate made of two types of metals that, when there is a prolonged overload, deforms due to the heat generated. In other words, when the temperature rises to a standard safety level, the switch is activated, thus cutting off the power supply, thus preventing any damage to the connected equipment.
  • Magnetic mechanism. This is the most effective because it responds immediately to short circuits. It works through an excessive current that activates a type of electromagnet, which, in turn, disconnects the circuit in a matter of seconds.

Main Uses of the Thermal Magnetic Switch

The uses of the thermal magnetic switch are very wide and varied, and they also cover numerous sectors. This is due to its great capacity to deal with overloads and sudden short circuits.

The most common use is concentrated in residential installations, that is, in homes. In practice, they can be found in the individual electrical panels of each house. In this way, the installation is protected from electrical faults and, consequently, from damage to appliances and possible fires. Therefore, it is an absolutely indispensable element in any home.

On the other hand, it is also widely used in offices and small businesses. The reason is that it guarantees electrical safety in buildings that, in turn, have numerous electronic equipment (lighting, computers, data servers, etc.), with the consequent risk that this entails.

However, it is in the industrial sector where thermal magnetic switches are most widely used. For example, they are incorporated into heavy machinery, as well as in automation systems and control panels. These devices play a crucial role, preventing production downtime or costly breakdowns in the equipment that makes operations possible.

On the other hand, it is also important to mention the transportation and telecommunications industries. Switches of this type are also used to protect signaling systems, elevators, and numerous communication networks. Their application results in maintaining operational continuity and preventing electrical failures.
